that’s so true! I hope that all educators and even all adults dont ask kids to be quite. these little talkes we have with them, in hallways, during a school ride or during waiting at a clinic or something, are very important for their language development (pragmatics, syntax, etc.)

Totally agree. I’ve been the recipient of many a shushing over the years. But this is speech time and communication WILL HAPPEN on my watch! I love my current school because they realize this and support us no matter where I take our communication sessions. Now if I could just get them to not call them out in class, that it is their SPEECH time.

I completely agree with you! I definitely get shushed or have teachers close the door because I am talking with my students…I often feel like the kids don’t get enough time to have conversations and develop social skills at school! Also, it’s about a 2-3 minute walk from my kindergarten classes to my room. I expect them to keep a reasonable volume, but I like to use every precious minute of time with them! 🙂

Direct your shusher to the Common Core State Standards concerning speaking and listening. Clearly, conversational speech on age appropriate topics is in the purview of academics.
